Principles of Film Form Blog

Function: Is several elements in a film that serve various purposes. An example of this would be from the film Final Destination where student Alex is about to go on an airplane to go on a field trip to France with many other students. Right before Alex leaves his dad tells him that he needs to take care of himself because he has his whole life ahead of him. Alex’s dad saying that plays a big function in the film for it foreshadows the plot of pretty much the whole movie because after a frightening premonition Alex and friends get off the plane minuets before it explodes. Death hunts Alex and others down to then get revenge and take their lives away.

Similarity and Repetition: is any significant repeated element that contributes to the overall form in a film. A good example of this would be from the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory where five kids win golden tickets to tour a mysterious chocolate factory run by magical Willy Wonka. Similarity and Repetition is made for throughout the film one of the kids does something bad and the results are disastrous and as the kid is escorted out the oompa loompas which were workers for Willy Wonka would always sing a catchy song as the child left. The audience would always be expecting this.

Difference and Variation: is ways that contrast the main characters in a movie and their environments. A good example of this would be from the movie Batman Begins which takes place after Bruce Wayne’s parents murderer was assassinated. After finding himself Bruce decides to help his city from wrong doing and becomes the masked vigilant known as Batman. Difference and Variation play a good role in this film because Bruce Wayne is himself the movie is more brighter and colorful with a more happy tone. However when Bruce goes out as Batman the movie just automatically turns darker and very dim and the happy tone just simply fades out into dim emotions and suspense.

Unity and Disunity: is where this form means the balance in a movie where things are sometimes brought up all together in the end but sometimes some things are left out. A good example of this would be from the movie Watchmen where a superhero is killed by trying to just save people and the other superheros just go on with their everyday lives.
